No law shall be made that promotes one religion over any other

The fact that every signer of the Declaration of Independence was a Christian and still they refused to make Christianity the state religion or even give Christianity preferred treatment says much about their desire that all religions (and non-religions) be treated equally. The founders of the United States did not intend to create a Christian nation, that is obvious. Every Christian artifact from the “Under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance to the “In God We Trust” on the currency was added afterwards. When someone states that ‘The founding fathers were Christian,’ the correct response is ‘exactly, and they made sure that Christianity is conspicuously absent from the Constitution.’
